I Am... - 5-31 March 2009 at Tonic Art Space, LGI, Leeds

An intriguing exhibition from Total Image Nation in the wonderful gallery space at Leeds General Infirmary.

The exhibition features an eclectic mix of more than 20 images, from self-portraits of the artist to pictures that embody the way the artists see themselves. 'I Am' has styles ranging from stormy landscapes to hauntingly evocative pinhole pictures, all of which lend themselves to this wonderful airy space. Vast windows flood the bustling thoroughfare with light during the day but by night the low lighting gives the images added texture and depth. Being in a public area the exhibition brings a wide variety of images to patients, doctors, staff and visitors alike. There is always something new and thought-provoking to look at.

Among my favourites were Paul Leader's 'untitled woman and child', a truly beautiful image portraying strength and fierce determination. I also love John Kiely's landscapes, the turbulent stormy skies add a sense of drama to these beautiful images. Karen Harvey's 'They say he is always watching' is a dreamlike and compelling image..... always watching who?
