Gun for Hire - Helmut Newton

Description:

Helmut Newton’s images depict women as empowered and powerful often through the composition and angle of view but also through their magnificent expressions which are at once both vacant and yet full of attitude, almost conveying an opinion, or at least a recognition of the viewer.

The wonderful colours and exciting shadows add to the edgy story being portrayed in some of these images. Perhaps not a story, but a brief outline, a shadow for us to add our own dimensions to.

The locations vary between the stark scenery of rubble and barbed wire contrasting with elaborate mansions and magnificent sculptures but all are demonstrating strength to the viewer of the women pictured.

The women are powerful and beautiful. They have strength and sex appeal. They smoke cigarettes and tower over us. They seem aware of us watching them; in a semi-voyeuristic manner we are viewing them and finding no flaws.

Black glossy hair, pouting red lips, oiled skin, they distract us from the full image and then suddenly we are hit by its completeness.

Extravagant, powerful, serious and striking, a selection of killer images shot straight from the hip.

Steve DT:

Excellent. He definitely produced striking images that will remain with us. My favourite story of him also shows him as a humble person. At one shoot on the beach, he took his test shot with a polaroid (as was the practice), and he gave away the image to a bystander, who also asked him to sign it, which Helmet did - for fun, and not a fee. No pretensions. Steve DT
